Seedlac
Seedlac is the first and purest processed form of raw lac resin, harvested from the Kerria lacca insect on host trees across the forests of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Raw sticklac is crushed, sieved through mesh screens to remove insect fragments and wood particles, then washed to produce clean granular seedlac.
As the essential base material for all shellac products, seedlac retains the natural wax content of lac (3–5%) and is the preferred raw material for manufacturers who process it further into shellac flakes or dewaxed shellac. It is also used directly in varnishes, adhesives, traditional lacquerwork and electrical insulation. We supply in 20, 40 and 60 mesh grades from our processing facility in Nawada, Bihar.

20, 40 and 60 Mesh Seedlac
Mesh describes granule size: the number is the count of sieve openings per inch, so a higher number means finer grains. We export seedlac in three mesh grades, each in Kusmi or Baisakhi crop.

Kusmi and Baisakhi Seedlac
Indian seedlac is traded by crop as well as by mesh. The crop depends on the lac strain and the host tree, and it decides the colour of the resin and its price. Every lot is labelled with its crop, and the batch COA states colour, impurities and moisture.

Seedlac — Common Questions
What is the difference between Kusmi and Baisakhi seedlac?
Kusmi seedlac comes from lac grown on the kusum tree. It is paler and usually sells at a higher price. Baisakhi is the main summer crop of the Rangeeni lac strain, grown mostly on palas and ber trees. It is darker and more orange, and costs less. Tell us which crop you need when you request a quote.
Which mesh grade should I order?
Mesh describes granule size: 20 mesh is the coarsest of our three grades and 60 mesh the finest. Finer granules dissolve faster. Tell us how you process the seedlac and we will suggest a mesh.
What is 40 mesh seedlac?
Seedlac sieved to a medium granule size, between our coarse 20 mesh and fine 60 mesh grades. It suits most dissolving and melting processes and is available in Kusmi and Baisakhi crops.
Is seedlac food grade?
No. Seedlac is a raw material and technical grade. For food glazing, the grade is E904 food-grade shellac.
How should seedlac be stored?
Keep it in sealed bags in a cool, dry place out of direct sun. Heat and humidity make lac granules stick together. See why shellac blocks in storage.
What is the difference between seedlac and shellac?
Seedlac is washed and sieved lac granules, a semi-processed raw material with 3–5% natural wax. Shellac is seedlac further refined, by melting and filtering or by solvent processing, into flakes or buttons that dissolve cleaner. See seedlac vs shellac flakes vs dewaxed.
What is the difference between seedlac and sticklac?
Sticklac is the raw lac scraped from the host tree twigs, with wood and insect debris. Seedlac is sticklac that has been crushed, washed to remove the dye (sold separately as red lac dye) and sieved into clean granules.
