Bleached Shellac
Bleached shellac (often called white shellac) is produced by dissolving seedlac in alkali and bleaching under controlled conditions, then precipitating and drying. The result is an off-white to near-white resin that keeps shellac’s film-forming, gloss and barrier properties while removing the amber colour that standard grades impart.
It is supplied in two forms: standard bleached (natural wax retained) and dewaxed bleached — the premium combination for applications demanding both light colour and full clarity, including light wood finishes, paper and board coating, cosmetics, and food/pharma coating where compliant grades are specified.
*On E904: since Commission Regulation (EU) 2026/189, only wax-free (dewaxed) bleached shellac meets the E904 purity criteria of Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012; standard bleached shellac retains natural wax and is supplied for technical use. Confirm the intended application at enquiry stage and we will match the grade and documentation accordingly, exactly as covered in our E904 buyer’s guide.
Note for stockists: bleached shellac has a shorter practical shelf life than orange grades — it should be stocked to rotation, and we date-code every lot.

Bleached Shellac — Common Questions
What is the difference between standard and dewaxed bleached shellac?
Both are bleached to a near-white colour. Standard bleached shellac keeps its natural wax and is used for technical applications. Dewaxed bleached shellac has wax below 0.2%, gives a clearer film, and is the grade for food and pharmaceutical coating.
Why does bleached shellac have a shorter shelf life?
Bleached shellac slowly loses its ability to dissolve as it ages, faster than orange grades, especially in heat. Store it cool and dry and use it within about 12 months.
Which bleached grade is used for food?
Only the dewaxed bleached grade. In the EU it is the only form that meets the E904 specification. See E904 food-grade shellac.
What is bleached shellac used for in paper and board coating?
It is used in overprint varnishes and barrier coatings on paper and board. Its pale colour does not tint the print, and it adds gloss and grease resistance. For food-contact packaging, check the food-contact rules in your market.
What is bleached shellac used for in cosmetics?

Is bleached shellac the same as white shellac or refined bleached lac?
Yes. White shellac, bleached lac and refined bleached shellac are trade names for shellac decolourised by bleaching. It comes in a standard (wax-containing) and a dewaxed form, so state which one you need.
